saghar nizami: hairat se: master madan
The Poet: Saghar Nizami ساغر نظامی The Singer: Master Madan was born on 28 December 1927 in Khanna, a town today in Ludhiana district, then in Jullundur Division of Punjab, British India. The Master in his name is since he was only a boy. It is said that he started singing in public before his fourth birthday. By the age of eight, he was singing on the Delhi radio station. He and his older brother, Master Mohan, traveled widely in India and were given awards by rulers of different princely states. His final public appearance was at the age of 14 in Calcutta (West Bengal, India), where the audience insisted on his singing for hours. Following that he returned to Delhi. He soon became sick. His illness worsened as the time passed. It is said to be very painful. He ultimately passed away on 05 June 1942, a little over 14 years of age. He recorded eight songs: 3 ghazals, 2 Punjabi songs, and 3 bhajans. Most famous are the two Urdu ghazals by Saghar Nizami uploaded here. In his rendition (ادائیگی), he seems to be in complete control. This is extraordinary for somebody so young. The blend of beautiful poetry and his sweet voice is so nostalgic and romantic. To me It seems that somebody from an age long gone is knocking at my hearts door. The Punjabi songs are: باغاں وچ پینگاں پیّاں (baaghaan vich peengaan paiyyaan) راوی دے پرلے کنڈھے وے مترا رہندا ہے دل دا چور (Raavi dey parley kandhey vey mitraa rehndaa hey dil daa chor)
