‘Hindu girls being forcibly kept in Sindh madrassas’

Minorities are being forcibly converted and forced to study Islamiat, say MNAs. By Zahid Gishkori Published: March 15, 2012 Lawmakers discuss protection of minorities during National Assembly session. ISLAMABAD:  Hindu girls are being forcibly kept in various madrassas in Sindh and are later forced to marry Muslims, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) MNA Dr Azra Fazl told the National Assembly on Thursday. She was speaking on issue of Faryal Shah (Rinkle Kumari) who was allegedly abducted and forced to marry and convert to Islam earlier this month in Sindh. While speaking on the point of order, Fazl said that Hindus are facing a lot of challenges in Sindh. She stressed the need for legislation to protect minority rights and to end forced conversions. Fazl, who is also the sister of President Asif Ali Zardari, highlighted the issue in the parliament at a time when her brother received a sharply-worded letter from California Congressman Brad Sherman urging hi

Analysis: Options for military intervention in Syria

Image
Analysis: Options for military intervention in Syria By Jonathan Marcus BBC diplomatic correspondent   Syrian anti-government protesters want protection from government forces Since the outset of the Syria crisis in March 2011 there has been little appetite for outside military intervention. This has been based on two assessments. Firstly, that the situation on the ground in Syria is in many ways very different from that in Libya - the opposition is much more divided, the government's security forces are much stronger, and Syria's air defences are more effective. Secondly, there has been a view that the implications of toppling President Bashar al-Assad could prompt a much wider wave of instability in the region. Unlike Libya, Syria - both politically and geographically - is a central player in the Arab world, and sectarianism and instability there could threaten both Lebanon and Iraq. “The further milita

Dangerous waters: Running the gauntlet of Somali pirates

Dangerous waters: Running the gauntlet of Somali pirates By Frank Gardner BBC security correspondent, on board the MT Sea Legend   Vessels at risk from Somali pirates are increasingly using armed security teams Nato navies operating off the coast of Somalia have warned of a recent increase in maritime piracy. I decided to experience first-hand what seafarers go through. I joined them not on a warship - which pirates avoid - but on a merchant tanker, the 112,000-tonne MT Sea Legend, carrying 90,000 tonnes of gas oil from the Gulf of Oman, through the Gulf of Aden between Yemen and Somalia, past the Bab al-Mandab Strait and up the Red Sea to Suez. It is a 2,628-mile, eight-day voyage that sailors call "the route of fear". Several ships have been approached and attacked in the past few days. More than 100 sailors are still being held to ransom on the Somali coast. “The use of lethal force is an ext

Is Apple really worth more than Poland?

Image
Is Apple really worth more than Poland? By Ruth Alexander BBC News "At $500 billion, Apple is worth more than Poland" - so shouted the headlines last week. Can the technology giant really be worth more than this entire country? No, and here's why. CNN started this news line , which was picked up by media organisations around the world. It seems like an amazing fact - that Apple's stock market value, or market cap, of $506bn (£323bn) makes it worth more than Poland, whose Gross Domestic Product is about $470bn (£300bn). This would make Apple around the 20th biggest economy in the world. But it is not true. It makes no sense to compare the two like this. You might as well compare… apples and pears. This is because the market value of a company is linked to the expected value of all future profits. GDP, on the other hand, is a measure of the value of goods and services a country has produced in a single year.

China's social networks hit by censorship, says study

China's social networks hit by censorship, says study   China steps up censorship of banned terms in regions where unrest was high Chinese censors are actively targeting social media to quash discussion of banned topics, suggests research. The US study gives the most in-depth look at the extent of China's policing of discussions on microblogging sites. Analysis of almost 60 million messages from China's equivalent of Twitter suggested which topics were banned. It also revealed that China tuned its censoring activity to be more aggressive in places where political unrest was high. Word search The study, reported in New Scientist, by David Bamman, Brendan O'Connor and Prof Noah Smith from the Language Technologies Institute at Carnegie Mellon analysed short messages sent via the Sina Weibo service. The public programming interface to the Sina site let the trio grab 57 million messages sent between June 27 and September 30, 2011. Three mon

Author SJ Watson talks about long-term memory loss

Author SJ Watson talks about long-term memory loss By Philippa Roxby Health reporter, BBC News   Author SJ Watson created the character of Christine after reading about people with long-term memory loss "As I sleep, my mind will erase everything I did today. I will wake up tomorrow as I did this morning. Thinking I'm still a child. Thinking I have a whole lifetime of choice ahead of me." These are the thoughts of Christine, the main character and narrator in SJ Watson's current, best-selling debut novel, Before I Go To Sleep. She has recurrent memory loss, losing all knowledge of her past from one day to the next. As a result, she wakes each day not knowing where she is or how she got there. Or that the man lying next to her in bed is her husband of more than 20 years. But does this form of memory loss actually exist? "I thought I'd made it up," says the author Steven Watson. "But

Italy's women still wait for change under Mario Monti

Image
Italy's women still wait for change under Mario Monti By Mark Duff BBC News, Milan Silvio Berlusconi, may be gone, but Italian women still face an uphill battle for respect in the face of what some commentators describe as a "damagingly" sexist media. Just over a year ago, one million women took to the streets and piazzas of towns and cities across Italy. They were angry at their portrayal on television and in the press as little more than the playthings of rich and powerful old men, and at the tawdry revelations of then Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's shenanigans. This week, as Italian men handed out sprigs of fragrant yellow mimosa to mark the Festa della Donna (Women's Day), much on the surface may appear to have changed. Mr Berlusconi has gone, and the new technocratic government presents a very different picture of the role of women at the highest level of politics. Included in t

Brides of contention

By Hasan Mujtaba    ( I wrote this story about forced conversion of Hindu women in Pakistan of  1994. So far forced conversion of Hindu women  nothing has been changed. Even the modus operandi of forced conversions and its operaters remain as the same). .....                           ......                                    .........                               .......   On January 19, a Hindu girl named Daya Bai disappeared from her house in Daharki, district Ghotki (Sindh, Pakistan). She surfaced ten days later outside the deputy commissioner's office, wearing bridal clothes, and accompanied by several hundred strong gathering (MANY OF WHOM WERE ARMED WITH AUTOMATIC WEAPONS) led by pirs of Bharchundi chanting allaho - akbar. During the nikah (wedding) that followed, Daya Bai's mother wept inconsolably, repeatedly striking her head on the floor in anguish,"let me meet my daughter even if she is getting married' she implored but her pleas fell on deaf ea
